Cristiano Ronaldo Generated $500 Million In Value For Nike In 2016

Nike had a brutal 2016. It was the worst-performing Dow 30 stock, down 19%, after tripling over the previous five years. North American sales slowed, profit margins fell and Adidas reemerged as a strong competitor. Don’t blame Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo for the Swoosh’s problems. The global soccer icon delivered $500 million in value for Nike during 2016 through his massive social media network, according to Hookit, which measures the social and digital media value for brands.

Ronaldo is in a league by himself on social media and his sponsors reap the rewards. The four-time Player of the Year has 260 million followers across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. He added 65 million followers alone in 2016 (or about the combined totals of Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant). Ronaldo's 120 million Facebook fans are more than any other person on the planet.

Real Madrid ended difficult week 'happily' vs. Real Sociedad - Zidane

Real Madrid celeb vs. Sociedad

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said he was pleased that "a difficult" week had ended "happily" with an "important win" as the La Liga leaders stretched their lead at the top with a 3-0 victory at home to Real Sociedad on Sunday evening.

A Bernabeu still hurting following Madrid's midweek Copa del Rey exit was calmed when Mateo Kovacic shot Madrid ahead before half-time from Cristiano Ronaldo's pass, and the Croatian then set up Ronaldo to make it 2-0 soon after the break.

You just can't boo Cristiano Ronaldo - Real Madrid's Mateo Kovacic

Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic has defended Cristiano Ronaldo, saying Portugal international does not deserve to be booed by the club's fans.

Ronaldo responded to whistles from a section of fans at the Bernabeu stadium by scoring his team's second after the restart in Sunday's 3-0 home victory over Real Sociedad.

Portugal star admits to trying to convince Cristiano Ronaldo to join his club

Cristiano Ronaldo put a firm end to any speculation that surrounded his future at Real Madrid by signing a huge new deal to stay at the club until 2021 last November.

The 31-year-old is believed to be earning an eye-watering wage in the region of £400,000-per-week after tax.

But that hasn't stopped some people from trying to convince the forward to their club in the near future.

Ronaldo further cemented his name in Portuguese history by guiding the national team to success at last year's European Championships, even though he wasn't technically on the pitch when Eder scored the winner in extra-time of the final.

What Zlatan Ibrahimovic told Anthony Martial during their recent ‘pep talk’

Anthony Martial hasn’t exactly hit it off with Jose Mourinho since the Manchester United boss replaced Louis van Gaal in the summer.

The French forward, who joined United in a shock £36 million move from AS Monaco at the end of the 2015 summer transfer window, failed to make a positive first impression with his performances and has found himself in and out of the team ever since.

Martial’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, then angered Mourinho by linking his client with a potential move to Sevilla, but the 21-year-old appeared to have turned a corner when he started and scored against Middlesbrough on New Year’s Eve.

105-Year-old Cyclist Sets New World Record for Speed

robert-marchand-youtube

105-year-old Robert Marchand has set a new world record for fastest cycling time at a track near Paris.

On Wednesday, the French cyclist pedaled 14.08 miles in one hour – which is apparently 2.65 miles shorter than the previous record he set in 2014 for participants over the age 100. The impressive feat is now the most distance pedaled in an hour by someone 105-years-old or older. Robert claims that he could have gotten a better time if he hadn’t missed the 10-minute warning sign near the end of his attempt.

The stats that show how badly Liverpool need Sadio Mane

It's not unfair to say that Liverpool have hit a bit of a slump. With defeat to Southampton in the EFL Cup during the week, it marked a miserable period for the Reds, whose season now looks to be in danger of unravelling.

But it is perhaps no coincidence that this downturn in form started when they lost influential forward Sadio Mane to national duty with Senegal for the African Cup of Nations.

The club's pre-Christmas run of form now seems like a lifetime away, and Jurgen Klopp is now starting to realise just how important his summer signing has been to his plans.

It's been something that was on the cards for a while, as his last game before making way to Gabon saw him cancel out a goal that should have been the winner against Sunderland by giving away a last minute penalty for the Black Cats to equalise.

Women's final preview: One for the ages

There has arguably never been as much at stake as there is in Saturday's women's final between the Williams sisters.

By Vivienne Christie | 27 January, 2017

If ever there was a Grand Slam final for the ages, it’s this one. Featuring Venus Williams, at age 36, and her 35-year-old sister Serena, it’s the most senior Grand Slam final in WTA history.

But this is a showdown for the ages in far more than the literal sense. There has arguably never been as much at stake on the final Saturday of a major event.
